Proposed Improvements – Read more details below.
The City of Columbus, in coordination with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), would like your input on improvements that have been developed to address safety and connectivity issues at the intersections of Roberts Road/Frazell Road and Roberts Road/Spindler Road (see above for project area location map).
The intersections have a history of safety concerns. In 2013, a study identified measures to address these issues, and a 2020 feasibility study confirmed the need for improvements. It recommended a double mini roundabout as the preferred solution, offering an acceptable Level of Service (LOS) along with pedestrian and stormwater features. Between 2020 and 2022, the project area experienced 17 crashes, 47% of which resulted in injuries. Left-turn crashes were the most common, making up 11 of the 17 crashes.
To improve safety, the project proposes to reconfigure the two existing intersections and construct two mini roundabouts. The project will also construct a shared use path from Brookford Drive to Willow Glen Road and sidewalk along Spindler Road to Brookmont Drive. Additional work includes drainage improvements, and new lighting and signs.
At this time, exact right-of-way information and needs are not known. If right-of-way acquisition is necessary from your property, a City of Columbus real estate representative will contact you directly at a later date to discuss the right-of-way needs, the acquisition process, and your rights under that process. Information on maintaining traffic during construction will be provided as project development advances. Environmental studies are ongoing; however, no impacts to ecological resources are expected. Some utility impacts are expected. The project is tentatively scheduled to begin construction in the summer of 2028 and last approximately 16 months.
Clover Groff Natural Area, located northwest of the project area, is expected to be impacted as part of this project. It is expected that a portion of permanent right-of-way will be needed from the park property to construct the project. Clover Groff Natural Area is a 19.526-acre conservation area in the Far West community. It is accessed through the Mudsock Trail from Franks Park. Clover Groff Natural Area is a recognized recreational property and is protected from adverse impacts associated with federal-aid transportation projects. The City of Columbus and ODOT District 6 will coordinate with the City’s Recreation and Parks Department regarding project impacts and measures to minimize harm to receive concurrence that the project will not adversely affect the recreational activities, features, or attributes that qualify the property for protection.
The City of Columbus and ODOT are seeking public input regarding the proposed project and its impacts. We invite all those interested to attend and participate in an upcoming public open house. We hope you can join us at one of these open house sessions. (See top of page.)
These are open house style meetings, and you are welcome to stop by whenever it is convenient for you to view project exhibits, chat with project team members, and submit comments at your leisure. The same information will be shown at each meeting time. No formal presentation will be given.
Comments can be submitted through mail, email, or by phone to project manager Andrew Frankhouser. Comments are welcome at any time; however, those submitted by February 6, 2025, will be documented in the public input summary report, and will include responses to all comments submitted during the public comment period. Public participation in this project is solicited without regard to race, color, sex, age, national origin, or disability. Requests for interpretation services or reasonable accommodation to participate in the meeting can be submitted to Andrew Frankhouser prior to December 20, 2024.
